Frequently Asked Questions About Teas

What distinguishes Laborant's artisanal teas?

Our teas are original blends, handmade from natural ingredients - tea leaves, flowers, herbs and spices. We do not use artificial flavours or dyes. Each composition is inspired by the tradition of Karkonosze laboratory assistants, ancient herbalists discovering the properties of natural plants. We pack our teas in reusable packaging that protects their aroma.

What types of teas do you offer?

We offer five signature blends: white tea with rose petals (Rose Journey), green sencha with jasmine buds (Jasmine Fantasy), Earl Grey with raspberry and lavender (Cornflower Adventure), rooibos with cocoa nibs and cinnamon (Chocolate Relaxation), and herbal tea with honeybush (Honey Soothing). Each has a unique flavor profile and character.

Which teas are decaffeinated?

Two of our blends are naturally decaffeinated: Chocolate Relaxation (rooibos with cocoa and cinnamon) and Honey Soothe (herbal tea with honeybush). Both can be enjoyed at any time of day, including in the evening, without worrying about disturbing your sleep. Rooibos and herbal blends are naturally caffeine-free.

How to properly brew loose leaf tea?

General rule: white and green tea — water 70-80°C, brewing 2-3 minutes. Earl Grey (black tea) — water 90-95°C, brewing 3-5 minutes. Rooibos and herbal teas — water 100°C, brewing 5-7 minutes. Use about 2g of tea (a level teaspoon) per 200ml of water. Do not brew delicate teas with boiling water — water that is too hot extracts bitterness.

How to store tea to preserve its aroma?

Store tea in an airtight container, away from light, moisture, and strong odors. Our glass jars with lids are perfect for this. Avoid storing tea next to spices or coffee – tea absorbs surrounding aromas. Properly stored loose leaf tea retains its full flavor for 12-18 months.

Are Laborant teas suitable for a gift?

Absolutely. Our teas in elegant jars look beautiful and are a ready-made gift in themselves. If you're looking for something more, we recommend our gift sets, which combine teas with specialty coffee. Available in three variants: Mini, Classic, and Premium – each packaged with a Laborant wax seal.

What tea for relaxation in the evening?

For an evening of relaxation, we recommend Chocolate Relaxation—rooibos with cocoa nibs and cinnamon. It's naturally caffeine-free, and the sweet notes of chocolate and warming cinnamon create a mood of peace and tranquility. Another option is Honey Soothe—an herbal tea with honeybush, which has a calming effect. Both taste excellent with a spoonful of honey.

What is white tea and why is it special?

White tea is the least processed variety of tea — the leaves are hand-picked at the earliest stage of growth and subjected only to natural drying. As a result, it retains the most natural antioxidants and has a delicate, subtle taste without bitterness. Our Rose Journey is a white tea enriched with rose petals, which adds a floral aroma.

Tea Guide

Types of tea — what's the difference between white, green, black, and rooibos?

All "true" teas—white, green, black, and oolong—come from the same bush: Camellia sinensis. They differ in the degree of oxidation (fermentation) of the leaves after harvesting, which affects the taste, brew color, and caffeine content.

White tea is the least processed variety. Leaves and buds are hand-picked at an early stage of growth and only air-dried naturally, without rolling or fermentation. This preserves the maximum amount of natural antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The brew is light golden, delicate, with virtually no bitterness. White tea contains less caffeine than green or black tea. Our Rose Journey is a white tea with rose petals—subtle, floral, perfect for a peaceful afternoon.

Green tea is slightly more processed—after harvesting, the leaves are heat-treated (steamed or pan-fried), which stops fermentation. This preserves their green color and fresh, vegetal taste. Sencha is the most popular Japanese green tea—the leaves are steamed, giving them a grassy, slightly sweet character. Our Jasmine Fantasy combines sencha with jasmine buds—a classic combination where the freshness of green tea meets the floral aroma of jasmine. Green tea contains a moderate amount of caffeine and is rich in catechins—powerful antioxidants.

Black tea is fully fermented, which gives it a dark color, intense flavor, and higher caffeine content. Earl Grey is a variety of black tea flavored with bergamot oil—a citrus fruit from the orange family. Our Cornflower Adventure is an original version of Earl Grey with raspberry and lavender—bergamot complemented by fruity sweetness and the herbal calm of lavender. It's our twist on a classic, surprising with its multi-dimensional flavor.

Rooibos is not technically a tea—it's an infusion from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis bush, growing exclusively in the Cederberg region of South Africa. It is naturally caffeine-free, rich in minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron) and antioxidants. It has a mild, slightly sweet taste. Our Chocolate Relaxation is rooibos with cocoa nibs and cinnamon—caffeine-free, naturally sweet, perfect for evening relaxation. It tastes like a warm dessert, but without sugar or calories.

Herbal tea (e.g., our Honey Soothe with honeybush) is a blend of herbs and flowers, without Camellia sinensis leaves. It is always caffeine-free and can be drunk without restrictions at any time. Honeybush gives it a natural sweetness without sugar.

How to Brew Every Type of Tea Correctly: A Complete Guide

Proper brewing is key to unlocking the full flavor of tea. Water that is too hot or brewing for too long extracts bitter tannins, which spoil the infusion. Here are detailed instructions for each type of tea from our offer:

White Tea (Rose Journey): Water temperature 70-80°C. This is important – do not pour boiling water! Boil water and wait 3-4 minutes for it to cool. Use approximately 2-3g of tea (a level teaspoon) per 200ml of water. Brew for 2-3 minutes, no longer. White tea can be brewed multiple times – the second and third infusions (each one minute longer) often yield an even better brew than the first. The infusion should be light gold and delicate.

Green Tea with Jasmine (Jasmine Fantasy): Water temperature 75-80°C. Sencha is sensitive to high temperatures – water that is too hot extracts bitterness and kills delicate floral notes. Use 2g per 200ml, brew for 2-3 minutes. The first infusion is the most intensely aromatic (jasmine), subsequent infusions reveal more of the sencha's flavor itself. Do not add sugar or milk – you will destroy the subtlety of the taste.

Earl Grey with Lavender (Cornflower Adventure): Water temperature 90-95°C. Black tea is the most resistant to high temperatures. Use 2g per 200ml, brew for 3-5 minutes depending on preferred intensity. 3 minutes will yield a lighter brew with a distinct aroma of bergamot and lavender, 5 minutes – a stronger, more classic Earl Grey. A splash of milk can be added (English tradition) or lemon, but we recommend drinking it without additions to fully experience the profile: bergamot + raspberry + lavender.

Rooibos with Cocoa and Cinnamon (Chocolate Relaxation): Water temperature 100°C – rooibos likes boiling water and does not become bitter even with long brewing times. Use 2-3g per 200ml, brew for 5-7 minutes. Longer brewing extracts more sweetness from the cocoa husks and cinnamon aroma. Rooibos also tastes great with milk or a spoonful of honey. For iced tea: brew stronger (double dose), cool, add ice – a delicious caffeine-free summer drink.

Herbal Tea with Honeybush (Honey Soothe): Water temperature 100°C. Brew for 5-8 minutes – herbs need a longer time to release their full flavor. The longer you brew, the more intense the infusion. It pairs perfectly with a spoonful of honey from Karkonosze – add honey to a slightly cooled infusion (below 40°C) to preserve its properties. Drink in the evening before bed – honeybush has a soothing and warming effect.

General rule: use fresh, filtered water for brewing tea. Hard tap water dulls delicate tea flavors. If you don't have a filter, use spring water. And never brew tea in the microwave – the infusion will be unevenly brewed.

Tea and health - what does science say?

Tea is one of the most thoroughly researched beverages in the world. Hundreds of scientific studies confirm its beneficial effects on health — although it's worth remembering that tea is a beverage, not a medicine, and it does not replace a balanced diet.

Antioxidants: Tea (especially white and green) is rich in polyphenols — natural compounds with strong antioxidant properties. Catechins (mainly EGCG) present in green teas help protect cells from oxidative stress. White tea contains even more of them than green tea, as it is less processed.

Caffeine and L-theanine: Tea contains caffeine, but in smaller quantities than coffee (approx. 30-50mg per cup vs 80-120mg in coffee). Interestingly, tea also contains L-theanine — an amino acid that mitigates the effects of caffeine and promotes concentration without feelings of nervousness. That's why you feel focused but calm after drinking tea — unlike the "jolt" from coffee.

Rooibos (our Chocolate Relax) does not contain caffeine or L-theanine, but it is rich in antioxidants different from those in true tea — aspalathin and nothofagin. It also contains minerals: calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. In South Africa, rooibos is traditionally given to children and infants — it is gentle on the stomach.

Herbal teas (our Honey Soothe) have properties dependent on their ingredients. Honeybush is closely related to rooibos and shares many of its properties — it is caffeine-free, rich in minerals and antioxidants, and traditionally used as a soothing and warming drink.

Remember: the best tea is one you enjoy and drink regularly. Even the healthiest tea in the world won't help if it sits in the cupboard. Our philosophy: drink what brings you pleasure, and health will be a nice bonus.

How to Store Tea? A Practical Guide

Tea is hygroscopic – it absorbs moisture and odours from its surroundings like a sponge. Proper storage has a huge impact on how long it will retain its flavour and aroma.

Tea's enemies are: light (especially sunlight), moisture, air (oxygen), heat, and foreign odours. Therefore, store tea in an airtight container, in a dark, dry, and cool place (but not in the refrigerator – there's too much moisture there). Our resealable packaging perfectly protects tea, both from staleness and light. It is best to store it in a cupboard away from the stove and oven (heat).

Never store tea next to spices, coffee, or strong-smelling products. Green and white tea, especially with delicate floral additions (like our Różana Podróż and Jaśminowa Fantazja), is the most sensitive and absorbs odours the fastest. Rooibos and herbal teas are slightly more resistant.

Properly stored loose leaf tea retains its full flavour for 12-18 months from the production date. Black tea (Earl Grey) is the most durable, while white and green tea are the least. This does not mean that tea is "bad" after this time – it simply loses its aromatic and flavour intensity. Tea that has lost its aroma can still be drunk – just use more leaves and steep for longer.
